Lady Liberty.

We had an interesting trip to the East coast this summer, complete with a visit to Lady Liberty. Here's a few things we learned on our adventure to Liberty Island.

Four-year old boys never tire of booger jokes.

It's much more fun to run down the stairs than to climb up them.

Modesty is everything.

Children do not value a "once in a lifetime family portrait."

Inevitably, the best picture of your children will be unscripted and NOT in front of the Statue of Liberty.

**TRAVEL TIPS regarding the Statue of Liberty visit:
  • If planning a visit in the summertime, buy your tickets well in advance.  All tickets except 8:00 a.m. weekday departure were sold out three weeks before our visit.
  • The Statue of Liberty's Crown is open for visitors. This requires a separate ticket. When I booked our tickets, the Crown tickets were sold out for the entire summer through September 18. You must be at least 4 feet tall to visit the Crown. Keep in mind the Crown is 20 degrees hotter than outside temperatures and you must be physically able to climb almost 400 stairs unassisted.
  • The National Park Service has terminated shuttle service between the light rail in Jersey City and the Statue Cruises boarding area in Liberty State Park. We were misinformed about the distance we would have to walk. If you are staying in Jersey City and boarding from Liberty State Park, I highly recommend taking a cab to the Statue Cruises dock.
